Short answer: Most hot tub covers get heavy because the foam inside slowly soaks up water. Once the foam is waterlogged, the cover gets hard to lift, stops insulating well, and usually can't be fixed. It's time for a new cover. Why covers get heavy
A standard spa cover is foam wrapped in plastic and vinyl. Over the years, steam and moisture from the hot tub work their way into the foam. Waterlogged foam is heavy and loses its insulation value, so your spa uses more energy to stay hot.
